What Is Vibe Coding? Can You Build Apps with AI Without Knowing How to Code?

Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want to an AI coding assistant. Here is what it is, what it can and can't do, the tools people use and the skills you still need.

Vibe coding is a way of building software where you describe what you want in plain language and an AI coding assistant writes much of the code. You guide it, test the result, and ask for changes. The term became popular as AI coding tools got good enough to build working apps from a description.

What vibe coding looks like in practice

  1. You describe the app: "A page where students enter their name and marks, and see a chart of class averages."
  2. The AI assistant creates the files and code.
  3. You run it, find what's wrong or missing, and describe the fix.
  4. You repeat until it works, then deploy it.

Tools people use

Popular options include AI-first code editors such as Cursor, assistants inside editors such as GitHub Copilot, and terminal-based agents such as Claude Code. General chat assistants also help for smaller pieces. Most have free tiers to start with.

What it is good at

  • Prototypes and internal tools built in hours instead of weeks.
  • Learning: seeing working code for an idea, then asking the AI to explain it.
  • Repetitive code such as forms, layouts and simple APIs.

Where it goes wrong

  • Hidden bugs: code that looks right but fails on edge cases.
  • Security gaps: exposed passwords or API keys, and missing input checks.
  • Messy growth: each new request piles on more code until nobody, including the AI, can change it safely.

The skills you still need

Vibe coding doesn't remove the need to understand software. It changes which skills matter most:

  • Writing clear specs: breaking an idea into small, testable steps.
  • Reading code: knowing roughly what each part does, so you can spot when the AI is wrong.
  • Testing and debugging: checking the app really works, not just that it runs.
  • Git: saving working versions so you can undo a bad change.
  • Security basics: keeping secrets out of code and validating user input.

Is it a good career skill?

Yes, as an addition to fundamentals, not a replacement. Teams increasingly expect developers to work productively with AI assistants. People who can both use the tools and judge the output are the ones who stand out.

Questions

Do I need to know programming to start vibe coding?

No, you can start without it. But learning basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript alongside makes you far better at steering the AI and fixing its mistakes.

Which branch students can learn vibe coding?

Any branch. It is especially useful for non-CS students who want to build tools, prototypes or a portfolio quickly.
